October 3-9 is fire prevention week and the theme this year is focused on smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are an extremely important means of preventing home fire fatalities and damage by providing an early warning signal so you and your family can escape. Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, and on every floor of your home. It is good practice to test all smoke alarms once per month and replace them every eight to ten years. Make a fire safety plan that includes the most direct escape routes from your home and a designated place for your family to meet. Test this plan often so that your entire family is prepared. Remember, preparedness saves lives. Take a few moments this week to test your smoke alarms and your fire safety plan. Install, Inspect, Protect!
