Burns

The most common types of burn injuries are fire/flame burns, scalds, and contact burns. Burns are painful and can result in serious scarring or even death. The following are some safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association on preventing burns.
1. Keep hot foods and liquids away from table and counter edges so they cannot be pulled off or knocked over.
2. Have a 3-foot "kids-free" zone around the stove and anything that gets hot like a wood stove, portable heater, or fireplace.
3. Never hold a child in your arms while preparing hot food or drinking a hot beverage.
4. Teach children that hot things can burn.
5. Be careful when using things that get hot such as curling irons, ovens, lamps, and heaters.
6. Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of children and in a locked cabinet.
7. Wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when cooking.
8. Never leave a child alone in a room with a lit candle, portable heater, lit fireplace, or hot appliance.

Stay safe and practice your fire emergency plan! Happy Fire Prevention Week!
