Are you ready?

As National Preparedness Month is coming to a close, I have been reflecting on all I have learned about disaster preparedness this month. I learned that I need to make a plan. This plan should include how to get in contact with my family, how to leave or return home, gathering important documents for quick access, and thinking about safety for my pets. Making a plan starts with talking about disasters and terrorism with my family. I have learned that I need to make a kit to sustain me and my family for at least 72 hours. My kit should include water, food, batteries, a battery operated radio, flashlights, first aid kit, and important emergency phone numbers. And finally, I have learned that I must be informed and alert about what is going on around me. It is so important to be tuned in with my surroundings, and informed of trends going on at the federal, state, and local levels.

In the past month, I have made a plan, made a kit, and become informed. National Preparedness Month really helped me realize how important it is to be responsible and prepared because you never know if/when disaster will hit. I can only hope that others have learned as much as I have this month. Are you ready?
