Lots of ways to get involved!

The Resource and Disaster Management Department at HandsOn Central Ohio has a lot of great opportunities coming up to get involved and trained in disaster response. What are you waiting for? Take a look at all of the events listed below and sign up for one or two. They are all sure to be informative, fun, and free!

Pet Preparedness Training: HandsOn Central Ohio is partnering with Columbus Public Health to provide pet preparedness training to Citizen Corps volunteers. Aaron Messer, Public Health Veterinarian and Registered Sanitarian at Columbus Public Health, will give valuable information about how to include pets in disaster planning. The training is January 29, 2011 from 2pm to 4pm at Thompson Recreation Center, 1189 Dennison Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43201. Pets are welcome! Regional Best Practices Conference: HandsOn Central Ohio and Franklin County Citizen Corps invite you to a best practices conference on Tuesday March 1, 2011 from 9:30a until 3:00p at Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security, 5300 Strawberry Farms Blvd. Topics covered include best practices for training and recruiting volunteer leaders and updates on the new Citizen Corps and Ohio Responds website. This session is open to all state of Ohio County Citizen Corps, emergency management, health department or American Red Cross representatives, as well as any nonprofit and volunteer organizations. Sensitivity to Aging Training: HandsOn Central Ohio is partnering with the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging to bring an interactive training about ways to work with Older Adults, specifically in disaster situations. Participants will learn techniques to help physically evacuate older adults from their homes in an emergency. The training is on March 29, 2011 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at HandsOn Central Ohio, 195 North Grant Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43215. To register, please click here.

Full Scale Exercise Volunteer Opportunity: HandsOn Central Ohio is currently recruiting 100 volunteers to participate in the Franklin County and Columbus Public Health full scale exercise on April 21, 2011. The full scale exercise will be a simulation of a biological attack on Franklin County that is as close to reality as possible and includes participation from the Columbus Fire Department, Police Department, Hospitals, Health Departments and Nonprofit agencies. Volunteers are needed to test the Volunteer Reception Center’s capability to process untrained or “spontaneous” volunteers during a disaster. Volunteers will be actors in the exercise and play spontaneous volunteers that are eager to help first responders in their efforts to contain the biological attack. All “spontaneous volunteers” will be processed through the Volunteer Reception Center at COSI, 333 West Broad Street to test its function and efficiency. The exercise will take place on April 21, 2011 from 8am-4pm. We need your help! Please join us in this important test of Franklin County’s Emergency Response Plan and Volunteer Reception Centers. Operation Life Saver Safety & Security Training: HandsOn Central Ohio is partnering with Operation Life Saver to provide this interacting training. Participants will learn all the safety aspects involving trains and tracks plus knowing where to find critical contact numbers and identify crossings if an incident has occurred. In addition, the class covers techniques for evacuation of motor vehicles if stalled on the tracks or a traffic collision, and illustrates the various traffic control devices and the physical forces of a typical freight train. The training is scheduled for May 19, 2011 from 6pm to 8pm at HandsOn Central Ohio, 195 North Grant Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43215. To register, please click here.

2-1-1 Disaster Volunteer Opportunity: HandsOn Central Ohio is looking for volunteers to be available to staff our 2-1-1 line and answer calls during a disaster or public health emergency. Volunteers will receive in depth training including protocols to answer 2-1-1 calls and make appropriate referrals, a detailed overview of emergency management and Franklin County’s emergency plan, and bimonthly trainings to supplement emergency management knowledge. Volunteers will only be deployed during a disaster or emergency. Candidates must be over 18 and have a valid driver’s license/ State photo ID.
