Preparing your Pets for Disaster

Americans were shocked to find out that that during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many pet owners died in the disaster because they refused to evacuate the area and leave their pets behind. Putting into action the lessons learned during Katrina, the U.S. passed the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act which requires local and state disaster plans to include provisions for household pets and service animals in the event of a major disaster or emergency. While federal legislation is a great start, preparedness is most effective at home. There are millions of pet owners in the United States whose pets are literally members of their family. If you own a pet, take the steps now to prepare for disaster. Include your pet in your family's emergency plan and include supplies for your pet in your emergency kit. Supplies for your pet could include:
- Food
- Water, at least one gallon per day for each pet
- Medicine or medical records
- Collar with ID tag, harness, or leash
- Pet Carrier
- Sanitation materials
- A picture of your pet to document ownership and help in identifying the pet in case you get separated

Remember, with simple preparations, you will be ready for the unexpected and ultimately save yourself and your family stress, worry, and difficulty. Take the time now to get yourself and your pet ready.
