Ohio Severe Weather Awareness Week

Next week, March 22-28, has been declared Ohio Severe Weather Awareness Week by Governor Strickland. Ohio Emergency Management, Franklin County Emergency Management and the Disaster Preparedness Department of FIRSTLINK encourage everyone to be prepared for the severe weather that is common in Central Ohio during spring. Please use this reminder of Severe Weather Awareness Week to make sure that your 72-hour emergency kit is fully stocked and that supplies have not expired. Items to consider adding to your emergency kit might include:

  • NOAA Weather Radio
  • Local maps
  • Hand-operated can opener
  • Flashlights and extra batteries

For a complete list of appropriate items for your 72-hour emergency kit, please Click Here to be redirected to the Ready.gov website

Finally, as an important part of Ohio Severe Weather Awareness week, the statewide tornado drill will be taking place on Wednesday, March 24, at 9:50am. We would encourage you to check with your place of employment or your child’s school to find out if they are taking part in the statewide tornado drill.

  1. When it comes to our property, what do we expect in case of loss (hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, fire, etc.)? The disaster itself is news. What happens after the dust settles is the story: the aftermath shock. Here is something the public should know: with a little curiosity you can mitigate that shock.

Insurance policyholders/disaster survivors, need to be informed of access to basic rights and information--equality. The internet reaches far more people than anyone would have ever imagined, though difficult to gather those willing to pause, to inspect, to further...to think on their own. And yet, much is available gratis! It just takes looking: www.disasterprepared.net/info.html
