PROTECT yourself before and during a disaster

1. What to do in a FIRE:
  • Buy a smoke detector and check it annually.
  • Make a fire escape route with your family. Practice the route.
2. What to do in a POWER OUTAGE:
  • Store bottled water and non-persishable food ahead of time.
  • Store extra batteries.
3. What to do in a HEATWAVE:
  • Drink lots of water at a continual rate throughout the day.
  • Avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day.
4. What to do in a FLOOD:
  • Have an evacuation plan in place. Talk with out of town family and friends.
  • Keep a to-go kit with important documents and valuable items ready to go if need be.
5.What to do in a TORNADO:
  • Designate a "saferoom" in the house. This room should have no windows and no outside walls.
  • Store bottled water and a minimal amount of non-perishable food in "saferoom."
6. What to do in a winter SNOWSTORM:
  • Avoid unnecessary travel and pay attention to changing weather conditions.
  • After the storm, if you shovel snow, be extremely careful. Take breaks and avoid exertion.
