Yesterday, the nation honored the sacrifices of our Military Veterans. There were parades, memorial tributes and moments of silence across the country to pay respect to those that have served to protect our freedoms. To honor the Veterans, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), released a brand new section of their website specifically for Veterans. The website discusses ways that Veterans can continue to serve in the field of Homeland Security. One section of the website discusses Veterans becoming involved in their local Citizen Corps. Some of the suggestions from DHS for Veteran involvement include:
- Help your neighbors during and after a disaster by joining their Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT)
- Staff a flu vaccination clinic or provide support during a public health emergency via the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)
- Talk to your local veterans' organizations about local safety and preparedness and see how you can team up to assist local efforts. Start at Veteran's of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and American Legion Auxiliary.
