72 Hour Kit
When a disaster strikes its important to note that government officials and first responders may not be able to immediately assist you. Depending on the disaster you may not have access to clean water, food, or electricity for several days. If this should happen it is important to be prepared. One way you can be prepared is to create a 72 hour disaster kit. This kit includes not just food and water but also other items crucial to your survival. Basic supplies include; water (1 gallon per person per day), canned or dried food, battery powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, prescription medicine, whistle, garbage bags, maps, can opener, moist towelettes, and a first aid kit. Additional items may be added where you see fit. By having this kit on hand you will be able to sustain yourself for 72 hours. Keep your kit in a container that can be easily accessed and carried should you need to evacuate. A plastic container with a lid is ideal but a large plastic bag will work as well. Make sure your container is waterproof so your kit stays intact. For a more extensive list of items to include in your kit please visit www.ready.gov for more information.
